Introduction

The Skills Development Foundation is a South African non-profit organisation which aims to develop critical learning, life and entrepreneurial skills amongst previously disadvantaged learners. Our goal is to enable learners to become independent and successful learners. The learners of eight so-called Focus Schools in the Western Cape will be the first recipients of our material.

Through our various strategic partnerships with leading educational organizations, learners will be provided with:

1. Access to network enabled educational software: FUTURE ISLAND (high schools) or URBAN QUEST (primary schools) developed by Leaf Educational Designs – The ultimate in educational software, which makes acquiring learning, life and entrepreneurial skills easy. The programs offer 24 critical learning areas, 32 hours of intensive training via the latest 2D and 3D technologies. Content is mediated through active learning principals.

2. Access to professional support which gives help and advice to both learners and parents via our LeafLine Call Centre. This call centre is managed by Leaf Educational Designs. It offers further explanation of the 24 critical learning areas covered by the above mentioned educational software. By calling LeafLine Call Centre parents and learners will be able to access a nationwide referral database of health and educational professionals.

3. Membership to EduMotion - Educational Motivation that rewards learners for the successful implementation of newly acquired skills from the above mentioned educational software. EduMotion is an educational motivation system managed and implemented by Leaf Educational Designs. Quarterly incentives are offered to promote their participation and personal development. EduMotion incentives are offered to learners who submit examples of their work which demonstrate the application of different techniques or study methods to current schoolwork.

4. Participation in quarterly seminars/workshops, presented by Leaf Educational Designs that offer interpersonal training on important topics covered by the educational software.

5. Access to WebLessons™, a web-based e-learning management system developed by E-learning Systems International™, a global thought leader in the advancement and development of eLearning applications which maximize the potential of the global network as a platform for managing and delivering highly effective instructional programs at any time, from any location, using only a standard Web browser. WebLessons will enable learners to turn the ocean of online information into a safe and structured learning environment via an easy to use Web-based software application.

Educational institutions and teachers will be provided with:

1. Interactive Curriculum Support (ICS) – an e-learning environment to ensure quality teaching. Interactive Curriculum Services offers an interactive curriculum to each individual teacher, as per the Revised National Curriculum Statement.

2. Access to the Weblessons™ system which will offer teachers an end-to-end learning management system that includes tools for planning a complete web curriculum, assigning topics, and tracking your progress. Each lesson comes with a comprehensive Instructor's Guide that offers additional Web sites, ideas for extension activities, document based questions (DBQs), and additional whole-class learning.
